Bonfire night or Please to Remember …

Effigy of Guy Fawkes and fireworks

It’s that time again, time to get pagan and burn images and set off fireworks, all in the name of democracy, of course. For those of you who are convinced we have finally gone completely mad, you may want to read this article and remind yourselves of of the special occasion.

We have a few curiosities for this year. First up, an article from a Newfoundland paper about their celebrations being called off  for a curious reason – we didn’t actually know that Guy Fawkes’ Night was celebrated in Canada, although it does make sense if you think about it …

A centuries-old traditional bonfire planned in a central Newfoundland community has been cancelled after organizers found a live shotgun shell near the pile set to be burned on Friday night. The Bishop’s Falls organizer of the Guy Fawkes night bonfire, Joe Thomas of the Lion’s Club, said the community can’t risk lighting up the pile in case there is more live ammunition inside it. “I don’t think it was malicious at all. I  think that someone honestly lost it, or didn’t see the ammunition in the bag that they were throwing in the pile,” said Thomas. It’s the first time bonfire night organizers in Bishop’s Falls have had to cancel the event, he said.

Oh well, at least they can have a good party and maybe make some bonfire brownies! Take a look at this recipe and more on goodtoknow.co.uk.

Finally, the first part of an excellent BBC programme about the conspiracy. There are six parts in all and you can find them on a playlist at YouTubehere.
